Today I learned that the lyrics to this popular hymn was written by Julia Ward Howe during the American civil war, after The Reverend James Freeman Clarke suggested to Howe that she write new words to a coarse and irreverent song that she heard soldiers singing. The lyrics written by Howe intertwines scenes from the battlefield and campfires with the author’s vision of the prophetic battle between the Heavenly Warrior and the Beast, as described in Revelation 19:11-21. This explains why the hymn became so popular both in the battlefield as well as in church worship services.
